SCOPH
The Standing Committee on Public Health (SCOPH) is a subcommittee of Jamaica Medical Students’ Association (JAMSA) whose purpose is to expose medical students to a variety of health issues, health policies and health promotions by engaging in activities with the University of the West Indies (UWI) and surrounding communities as a means of contributing to a healthier Jamaica. SCOPH currently consists of a group of goal-oriented and committed young people from the Faculty of Medical Sciences who demonstrate passion for giving back to the country by sensitizing different individuals in areas such as basic and primary schools on certain public health issues. In other words, promoting what was learnt in medical school and bringing awareness to the public. This student body represents the epitome of sacrifice, dedication, passion and teamwork.
OUR MISSION
Promotes the development of medical students worldwide regarding Public Health issues through an international sharing knowledge network, projects managements, community-based learning, capacity building, advocacy, exchanges placements and access to external learning opportunities.
OUR HISTORY
Medical students of the IFMSA formed the Standing Committee on Students’ Health (SCOSH) in 1952, driven by a strong will to take an active part in preventing and making policies concerning health problems. During the following years, the wide variety of activities led to the change of SCOSH to the Standing Committee on Health (SCOH) in 1963.
In 1983 the name of the Committee changed once more to the Standing Committee on Public Health (SCOPH).

OUR MAIN TOPICS
As aspiring health care professionals, SCOPH presents a fun and easy way of exploring volunteerism and the immediate impact it has on those who benefit from the programmes offered. SCOPH serves as a platform for students to participate fervently and effortlessly in activities that promote nation building. SCOPH helps to build students’ confidence, informational and interpersonal skills as students are given the platform to disseminate their knowledge on different health related topics with people inside and outside the medical profession. We provide students with networking opportunities as we collaborate with other standing committees and service groups through meetings and outreach events.
